Despite not getting round to reviewing them I still managed to at least make a note when I read something, so the year in review is as follows:

Best Fiction Book of the Year: Off Armageddon Reef
Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year: Fooled by Randomness

Total Books Read: 152
Total Fiction: 109
Total Non-Fiction: 43

Total First Read Books: 121
Total Re-Read Books: 31

Total Published Books: 118
Total Graphic Novels: 20
Total Web only Books: 14

Trend wise I started the year with almost all new read books and by December had regressed to the point where 90% of that months list was old favourites predominantly space opera/alternative history. I'm sensing that somwhat depressing news in the wider world had something to do with that. A similiar pattern is discernable in the type of book, the year started part frothy/part serious and by the end was almost all froth.

I also seem to have read the Second Chance series twice, once in March and once in November, presumably because its the literary equivalent of comfort food and always available via my pocket pc.

Goals for this year, to up the number of non-fiction books and spread my wings a little further. I seem to have gotten myself in a rut particulary on the sci-fi side and need to find some new authors to enjoy. Possibly I should look more at other fiction genres, maybe crime though if I do that I'll probably end reading Sherlock Holmes and the like again which doesn't fit the getting out of a rut principle.

Any comments/suggestions for a good book?

The scale of the map is 8 miles on a side, the distance between points 3 and 2 for example therefore works out as roughly 2 miles in a straight line or 3 miles as you walked it following the dry riverbed.

One of the central themes of the Warhammer world is the all pervading presence of the Warp, a plane that sits alongside the material plane and that houses the gods and Angels/Daemons of the Warhammer world. Currently the Chaos gods and their underlings are in the ascendant and thus the Warp is seen as a source of corruption and evil to the general population.

All Divine and Arcane power is derived from the warp with Wizards tapping into the raw energy (known as the Winds of Magic) of the warp to power their spells and Clerics/Paladins receiving theirs directly from the Warp entities they worship. Warlocks both use the raw energy of the Warp and make pacts with lesser Warp entities to provide their power.

The general mistrust and fear of anything related to the Warp means that all Arcane and Divine power users must belong to one of the Empire's Colleges of Magic and carry the seal of the College with them at all times. This seal identifies them as licensed practitioners and must be produced when asked for by any agent of the Imperial government, failure to do so usually provokes an energetic response from the local authorities. Nations such as Bretonnia and Tilea have equivalent systems and most Imperial authorities will recognise Seals originating from the Colleges found there. It is best however when travelling to the remote parts of the Empire to register yourself with one of the Empire's Colleges as well to avoid any unfortunate and possibly fatal misunderstandings.

Any comments?

The first cassette albums I bought (on the same day) were Twisted Sister's "Come Out and Play" and the soundtrack to the film "Cobra", haven't listened to or seen either of them in a long, long time. The first CD album I bought was Simply Red's "Stars" which I still listen to occasionally.
